Still a very rewarding reptile to have, if you are willing to put in the time! Monitors are very intelligent reptiles. This species still can be cranky even after being exposed to consistent handling. If you want to “tame” your timor monitor it is best to get a baby. The occasional mouse and waxworms are great for treats, but be cautious they are also fattening. Hornworms mealworms, and superworms can be given once weekly. Hatchlings and juveniles should be fed crickets or roaches 4 times weekly, and dusted with calcium once weekly. Timors enjoy humid environments and do best in 70% humidity, with peaks of 90%. Timor monitors DO REQUIRE UVB lighting, if you do not provide this for your lizard you are putting them at risk of having many health issues or even dying. This is a crepuscular species that enjoys being in the sunlight, but also stalking in the night. A basking spot should be readily available during the day with a temperature up to 120 degrees fahrenheit. The ambient temperature in the timor monitors cage should be around 82-85 degrees fahrenheit. Larger juveniles and adults do fine on jungle mixes, coco fiber, and mulch. Also NEVER house males together, and if you are housing more than 1 lizard in the same enclosure make sure there is room for everyone!įor hatchlings ALWAYS use paper towels or astro-turf. Just remember these are very smart reptiles and if you do not give them the enrichment they need, they may be harder to handle. Give them plenty of sturdy climbing areas, and a large bowl for them to soak in. Hatchlings can be kept in a 10 gallon aquarium, adults need a much larger area of AT LEAST 5’x4’x4’. They are a semi-arboreal species that will literally enjoy every inch of space you give to them. Timor monitors love to explore the ground, and climb in trees. Timor monitors are pretty small for monitors, only growing to about 3 ft. These lizards are a beautiful species from the Indonesian Islands, with a lifespan of about 10 years. ![]()
