General Information
Our program is a strong community-based emergency medicine experience! We work at two sister facilities, located on either side of the state line between West Virginia and Ohio allowing our residents to learn the nuances of different state laws and how they affect medical practice.
Ohio Valley Medical Center (OVMC), our larger facility, acts as a regional referral center for several smaller facilities in the surrounding area. Our staffing model allows residents to take a progressively larger role in the operation of the ED as they move through the program. Our senior residents see attending-level numbers of patients in each shift. Additionally, we are an unopposed residency. Our residents become proficient in a broad range of procedures through repeated, hand-on exposure. Typically, our residents have fulfilled the procedural requirement of the program by the end of their first year.
We emphasize the practical use of ultrasound in many aspects of our ED care and our residents develop proficiency through practice, online teaching modules, and workshops. We are the only facility in our area where our attending staff is all Emergency Medicine Board Certified. We have a very stable attending staff and do not have any locums providers. Our facilities are staffed by US Acute Care Solutions who are fully committed to the residency program and have been for more than a decade. Residents have the opportunity to be involved in monthly Quality Improvement and Business meetings as well as accompanying our attendings national leadership meetings for USACS. This rounds out our medical education with an equally important education in the aspects of medicine as a business.

Many of our senior residents moonlight at other facilities providing desperately needed EM trained physicians to smaller hospitals who struggle to fill staffing needs or at other, larger regional facilities. Our graduates have stepped directly into attending roles at a large variety of facilities from the rural ED to urban Level I facilities without missing a step. In addition to consistently demonstrating clinical excellence after graduation, our graduates have demonstrated academic excellence as well with a 100% first-time board pass rate for the last three years.
We will fill six spots this year and have filled all of our spots for the last several years. We strongly encourage an audition rotation. We typically have auditioning students July through December. There are a limited number of audition spots so make arrangements early. Contact Shelley Trouten at 304-234-1728 or at [email protected].
ACGME/AOA Status
We received ACGME accreditation in 2016. We are a 3 year program starting with the incoming class of 2016.
We currently participate in the NRMP (ACGME) match.
Didactics Program
We have a strong didactics program at OVMC. Our didactics occur every Thursday from 7:30 AM until 1 PM. This is “protected time”. The ED resident staffing schedule is modified so no resident works overnight the day before didactics allowing us all to be fresh and ready for this important educational activity. Didactics is a mandatory event for the residents. Usually, the didactic sessions starts with a case presentation by a medical student. We then review the answer and explanation for our weekly ECG quiz. We review interesting cases in a constructive, abbreviated M&M style with and open discussion between the residents and attendings about the case.
There are resident-prepared lectures, oral and written board preparation, and attending lectures. We reserve time for simulation lab on a monthly bases. We close each session with a joint internal medicine/emergency medicine lecture given by an attending or physician guest lecturer from 12 - 1 PM. We are fortunate to have an association with Ohio State University's Wexner Medical center through which we receive exclusive lectures from their faculty both onsite in-person and via exclusive video teleconference. We alternate using Rosen's and Tintinelli's Emergency Medicine texts as the core of our didactics.
Once a month, we also have journal club in which two residents present carefully selected articles relevant to the practice of emergency medicine. The program provides us with a subscription to Rosh Review, an excellent board preparation question bank, and we have required quizzes every week. We also are provided with a subscription for HippoEM, an excellent Emergency Medicine training suite put out by the same people that make the famed EMRap podcast. To stay on top of the latest trends in emergency medicine, our fantastic librarian emails landmark articles on a weekly basis.
Our didactics program is always improving! If residents have ideas about how to enhance our didactics, we can make changes! This is one of the great aspects of our program. Several of the biggest improvements in our didactics program were entirely resident driven. We also strongly encourage our residents to utilize the many reputable free and open access meducation (FOAM) resources available.
Simulation Lab
At OVMC our simulation center is used regularly during didactics (at least once a month). The simulation center comes equipped with an OB SimBot to practice vaginal deliveries, infant and pediatric simulators to practice neonatal and pediatric resuscitation and pediatric procedures, and ultrasound simulators and a full ultrasound machine for training purposes. In addition to these models, you can also find a high fidelity SimMan with broad capabilities, models that teach pericardiocentesis, cricothyroidotomy, transvenous pacing, and many more.
Dr. Posin, one of our most experienced attendings, is the director of our simulation lab. During the first week of residency, senior residents teach the interns procedures including central lines, chest tubes, intubations, lumbar punctures, etc.
We also host procedural training sessions for medical students and continuing education credit events for local EMS providers. Our high fidelity mannequin for un-announced Code Blue simulations at various locations in the hospital. This provides our interns as well as nursing and ancillary staff with more realistic training to prepare you for the real world experience.
Wilderness Medicine
Our program offers a unique opportunity for residents and medical students to rotate at New River Gorge, Fayetteville, WV, with hands-on experience through workshops and great didactics for practical medicine in the wilderness. This program was setup by Dr. Hrutkay, and has gained regional renown. For more information, see the Wilderness Medicine website.
Special Events
Some of the unique opportunities of our program allow us to work in special events within Wheeling and the surrounding areas. For some of these events you do need to be a PGY-2 or higher.
